Abstract summary
Two of every three persons living with dementia reside in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). The projected increase in global dementia rates is expected to affect LMICs disproportionately. However, the majority of global dementia care costs occur in high-income countries (HICs), with dementia research predominantly focusing on HICs. This imbalance necessitates LMIC-focused research to ensure that characterization of dementia accurately reflects the involvement and specificities of diverse populations. Development of effective preventive, diagnostic, and therapeutic approaches for dementia in LMICs requires targeted, personalized, and harmonized efforts. Our article represents timely discussions at the 2022 Symposium on Dementia and Brain Aging in LMICs that identified the foremost opportunities to advance dementia research, differential diagnosis, use of neuropsychometric tools, awareness, and treatment options. We highlight key topics discussed at the meeting and provide future recommendations to foster a more equitable landscape for dementia prevention, diagnosis, care, policy, and management in LMICs. HIGHLIGHTS: Two-thirds of persons with dementia live in LMICs, yet research and costs are skewed toward HICs. LMICs expect dementia prevalence to more than double, accompanied by socioeconomic disparities. The 2022 Symposium on Dementia in LMICs addressed advances in research, diagnosis, prevention, and policy. The Nairobi Declaration urges global action to enhance dementia outcomes in LMICs.Authors & Co-authors: Kalaria Raj R Maestre Gladys G Mahinrad Simin S Acosta Daisy M DM Akinyemi Rufus Olusola RO Alladi Suvarna S Allegri Ricardo F RF Arshad Faheem F Babalola David Oluwasayo DO Baiyewu Olusegun O Bak Thomas H TH Bellaj Tarek T Brodie-Mends David K DK Carrillo Maria C MC Celestin Kaputu-Kalala-Malu KK Damasceno Albertino A de Silva Ranil Karunamuni RK de Silva Rohan R Djibuti Mamuka M Dreyer Anna Jane AJ Ellajosyula Ratnavalli R Farombi Temitope H TH Friedland Robert P RP Garza Noe N Gbessemehlan Antoine A Georgiou Eliza Eleni-Zacharoula EE Govia Ishtar I Grinberg Lea T LT Guerchet Maëlenn M Gugssa Seid Ali SA Gumikiriza-Onoria Joy Louise JL Hogervorst Eef E Hornberger Michael M Ibanez Agustin A Ihara Masafumi M Issac Thomas Gregor TG Jönsson Linus L Karanja Wambui M WM Lee Joseph H JH Leroi Iracema I Livingston Gill G Manes Facundo Francisco FF Mbakile-Mahlanza Lingani L Miller Bruce L BL Musyimi Christine Wayua CW Mutiso Victoria N VN Nakasujja Noeline N Ndetei David M DM Nightingale Sam S Novotni Gabriela G Nyamayaro Primrose P Nyame Solomon S Ogeng'o Julius A JA Ogunniyi Adesola A de Oliveira Maira Okada MO Okubadejo Njideka U NU Orrell Martin M Paddick Stella-Maria SM Pericak-Vance Margaret A MA Pirtosek Zvezdan Z Potocnik Felix Claude Victor FCV Raman Rema R Rizig Mie M Rosselli Mónica M Salokhiddinov Marufjon M Satizabal Claudia L CL Sepulveda-Falla Diego D Seshadri Sudha S Sexton Claire E CE Skoog Ingmar I George-Hyslop Peter H St PHS Suemoto Claudia Kimie CK Thapa Prekshy P Udeh-Momoh Chinedu Theresa CT Valcour Victor V Vance Jeffery M JM Varghese Mathew M Vera Jaime H JH Walker Richard W RW Zetterberg Henrik H Zewde Yared Z YZ Ismail Ozama O
