Abstract summary

The earliest services for alcoholics in South Africa were begun by private organisations. The first legal steps were taken in 1911. The number of alcoholics in South Africa is discussed and a report on the 'tot system' is given. The facilities for the treatment of alcoholics are described, with special reference to the role of the Department of Social Welfare and the South African National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence.
