Abstract summary 

Aspects of mental disorder in developing communities are considered. The effects of changes precipitated by modern living conditions are expounded and these are related to the nature of, and impediments to, effective treatment strategies. An explosion in the need for treatment is predicted, and suggestions are made to handle the phenomenon.
