About Course

Welcome to this course on Research leadership and management.
This course is meant to equip participants with the essential skills and knowledge required to
navigate the complexities of leading and managing research initiatives. The course covers
crucial aspects such as research lifecycle, budgeting, risk management, the significance of
research in the African context, leadership fundamentals, project/grant management, and the art
of effective communication in research teams. The course will also discuss the various tools and sources of support available to the mental research community at all stages of the research life cycle, such as identifying sources of funding, finding potential collaborators, how to report research outcomes, measuring impact, data management, and research governance and integrity.

Course objectives

By the end of this course, participants will able to learn the following course objectives;
  • Understand the fundamentals of research management, including key principles and the
research lifecycle.
  • Assess the importance of management and leadership skills, and identify approaches to optimize resources when building a research career.
  • Understand how to effectively manage a research group: hire new people, manage existing employees, and engage teams to cultivate a positive culture. Identify key financial and administrative responsibilities for researchers, including regulatory compliance, financial reporting, and budgeting.
  • Develop and manage budgets for research projects, ensuring effective allocation of resources.
  • Will be able to identify, assess, and manage risks associated with research initiatives.
  • Will be able to recognize the importance of research in the context of Africa, understanding
    its unique challenges and opportunities.
  • Apply various leadership styles to lead and motivate research teams successfully.
  • Able to plan, execute, and manage research projects and grants efficiently.
  • Will be able to communicate research findings effectively to diverse audiences.
  • Able to foster collaborative communication within research teams to enhance overall project
    success.
  • Compare key responsibilities for mentors and mentees, strategically build mentorship teams, and enhance mentorship using coaching and sponsorship 
  • Understand the essential principles of effective research project management
  • Identify  key skills every research project manager needs to develop
  • Appreciate how successful research project management can benefit your career – both inside and outside of academia 
  • Understand the core stages of the research project lifecycle, so you'll be better prepared to manage every research project and programme for success
